The Niagara Indigenous Heritage Trail

The Friends of Laura Secord have worked with local partners to create the Brock District Trail Loop of the Niagara Indigenous Heritage Trail (NIHT), which connects DeCew House Heritage Park to Canada Games Park, Brock University, Thorold City Hall, Niagara Region International Plaza, and other related points of interest in the area.

The trail loop, which incorporates forested, gravelled, and paved multipurpose surfaces along its length, allows for convenient pedestrian, cycling, hiking, and handicapped access amongst the sites.

And like the 32 km long Laura Secord Legacy Trail, the NIHT is a proud part of the nationwide Trans Canada Trail network.

The Niagara Indigenous Heritage Trail trailhead sign is displayed by Caroline McCormick (President, Friends of Laura Secord) with Prof. Dave Brown (Brock University / FLS) and Tina Poirier (Coordinator, Stakeholder Communications, Trans Canada Trail)

These combined projects – the monument completion, landscaping improvements, and the heritage trail – have resulted in a greatly enhanced accessible tourism destination which memorializes events of national and international significance, provides important educational opportunities, and connects a constellation of recreational and heritage tourism assets.
